Nigerian lawmakers gather to finalize constitution alteration proposals

By Abbanobi -Eku Onyeka

Nigerian lawmakers have convened for a meeting of the Conference of State Legislature to finalize proposals for amending the country’s constitution.

The gathering, which includes the senate Speaker of the House of Representatives, distinguished senators, and honourable members, aims to approve previously reached positions and receive reports from sub-committees on further legislative actions on some of the bills.

Senator Barau I. Jibrin, Deputy President of the Senate and Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, welcomed participants, expressing delight at the gathering and thanking members for their commitment to delivering on the important legislative activity.

The meeting follows a previous gathering in Lagos where the bills were debated, and is expected to ensure that state houses of assembly are fully brought on board on the issues sieved after public hearings and consultations across the country.

The lawmakers are expected to make observations and input before presenting their report to the plenary and transmitting the bills that meet the threshold of Section 9 of the constitution to the state houses of assembly.

Senator Jibrin urged members to remain committed to ensuring the bills are transmitted to the state houses of assembly this year, saying “I crave your indulgence and encourage you to remain committed as always in this last lap of this assignment, to ensure that we fulfil our purpose to Nigerians.”

The meeting is seen as a crucial step in the constitution of Nigeria, with the lawmakers working to ensure that the country has a more secure, united, and prosperous future.
