Atiku unveils economic rescue, security plans as he visits ADC screening panel

By Myke Uzendu, Abuja

Former Vice President and presidential aspirant of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has presented what he described as a comprehensive economic recovery blueprint and security strategy to the party’s presidential screening panel ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku appeared before the ADC Presidential Screening Panel to verify his credentials as part of the party’s nomination process while also outlining his plans to address Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.

The former vice president reportedly described the engagement as more than a routine party exercise, saying it provided an opportunity to present solutions to Nigeria’s worsening economic hardship, unemployment, insecurity and governance challenges.

Atiku said Nigeria could not continue on a path where citizens face severe economic difficulties, businesses struggle under policy uncertainty and investor confidence weakens due to what he termed a lack of coherent economic leadership.

He stated that his economic agenda would focus on job creation, private sector expansion, fiscal discipline, stable macroeconomic policies and measures aimed at restoring Nigeria as an attractive destination for investment and sustainable growth.

The presidential hopeful also raised concerns over insecurity across the country, describing the rising incidents of killings, kidnappings and violent attacks as unacceptable.

According to him, no responsible government should remain passive while citizens are attacked in their communities, abducted on highways or threatened in their homes.

He said his proposed security framework would prioritise intelligence-driven operations, improved coordination among security agencies, decentralised security structures and stronger political commitment to combating criminality.

“At this defining moment in our national life, Nigeria does not need experiments. It needs tested leadership, clarity of vision, and the courage to make difficult but necessary decisions in the national interest,” Atiku said.

He further pledged commitment to building what he described as a secure, united and prosperous country where citizens can pursue opportunities in safety and dignity.

The statement added that Atiku’s appearance before the panel formed part of the ADC’s ongoing screening process for presidential aspirants seeking the party’s ticket ahead of the 2027 general election.
