The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has unveiled its presidential policy blueprint for the 2027 general election, placing the eradication of poverty and insecurity at the centre of its proposed governance agenda.
The blueprint, titled “Farewell to Poverty and Insecurity: Governance & Accelerated Development – Blueprint of a New Nigeria, 2027–2031,” was presented on Tuesday at the Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, by the party’s presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo.
The document outlines the SDP’s proposed policy direction for the country between 2027 and 2031, with emphasis on security, economic opportunity, social welfare, effective governance and accelerated national development.
The SDP, which is positioning itself as an alternative political platform, has adopted the message: “SDP… Progress! A New Nigeria is Possible.”
Adebayo said the SDP was approaching the 2027 election as a contest against the problems confronting Nigerians rather than against individual political opponents.
He identified poverty, insecurity, poor economic management, unemployment, inadequate electricity and the high cost of education among the major challenges the party intends to address if elected.
“The success of our campaigns will be measured by how we communicate these issues and solutions to Nigerians, to believe the solutions that we bring and to trust that we have the competence, character and integrity to do as we have said when we get in there,” Adebayo said.
On security, the SDP candidate has pledged decisive action against terrorism, kidnapping, illegal mining and other forms of criminality, promising to reclaim territories controlled by terrorists and dismantle the economic networks sustaining insecurity.
The blueprint also proposes a governance model anchored on measurable improvements in citizens’ welfare rather than the number of government projects announced or commissioned.
Adebayo further proposed making the Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy contained in Chapter II of the 1999 Constitution central to government policies, budgets and programmes. Under the proposal, Ministries, Departments and Agencies would be required to link major programmes to specific constitutional objectives and report measurable outcomes.
The SDP candidate also outlined economic measures targeting the cost of living, including a proposal to reduce petrol prices to N200 per litre within his first year in office through increased domestic refining and a revised arrangement for domestic crude oil supply.
He proposed measures to reduce transportation and housing costs, alongside free education and healthcare, as part of a broader social welfare programme.
On healthcare, Adebayo pledged to introduce free mandatory medical screening for Nigerians twice a year, arguing that preventive healthcare and early detection would reduce the burden of disease and improve access to treatment.
The SDP said the blueprint was designed as more than a conventional campaign manifesto, describing it as a comprehensive policy alternative to address the economic and security pressures facing Nigerians.
The party explained that the presentation was intended to give Nigerians, political stakeholders, professionals, members of the diplomatic community, civil society organisations and the media an opportunity to scrutinise its proposed policies and programmes.
The unveiling comes against the backdrop of growing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, with poverty, unemployment, insecurity, inflation and declining purchasing power expected to feature prominently in the campaigns.
