Senate President assures police retirees of pension scheme

By Abbanobi -Eku Onyeka

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has assured protesting police officers that their inclusion in the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) will soon be a thing of the past. Akpabio made this promise while receiving the leadership of retired police officers in his office, stating that the Senate will concur with the House of Representatives’ passed bill to exit police officers from the scheme.

According to Akpabio, the policy was “not well thought out” and that President Bola Tinubu would likely sign the bill into law. He emphasized that security personnel, including police officers, deserve better pension arrangements, citing the exits of the Military, DSS, and NIA from the scheme.

The Senate President promised that the issue would be resolved by next Tuesday, saying, “On Tuesday next week, we will concur with what the House of Representatives have done and produce an Act exiting you from the Scheme” ².
