The inauguration of the Ene Obi Development Centre (EODC) in Abuja marked a significant milestone in promoting women’s empowerment and social development in Nigeria. The event highlighted the importance of collaboration and collective action in achieving gender equality and uplifting vulnerable groups.
The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, described the EODC as “a beacon of light shining brightly in the pursuit of a better future for Nigerian women, girls, families, and the less privileged.” She assured stakeholders of the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote women’s empowerment.
The EODC focuses on training, skills development, and support services to empower women and girls. The Minister emphasized that the centre has the potential to be a game-changer in achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment. “The Federal Government remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote women’s empowerment, improve family life, and uplift the most vulnerable in our society.”
Dr. Otive Igbuzor, Executive Director of the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development, urged the government to protect civic freedoms and uphold human rights. “Silence is not an option. I call on women and youth to lift their voices and assert their leadership. Nigeria needs your courage.”
Dr. Andrew Mamedu, Country Representative of ActionAid Nigeria, praised Ene Obi as “bold, fearless, compassionate, and dogged always speaking truth to power.” ActionAid is proud to partner with the EODC, aiming to lift five million Nigerians out of poverty within the next nine years.
The Founder of EODC, Mrs. Ene Obi, stated that the centre will prioritize mentorship for young Nigerians and Africans, especially young women who face barriers limiting their opportunities. “This centre was created to address these issues. We exist to champion gender equality, strengthen governance and human rights, support youth leadership, promote equity, and ensure that marginalised groups are not forgotten.”
The EODC will design programmes that transform lives and stimulate community growth, advancing transparency, accountability, and the well-being of women and vulnerable populations. Mrs. Obi called for strong collaboration and urged stakeholders to support the centre and hold it accountable.
The event concluded with a message of hope for a brighter future for Nigeria, where women and girls are empowered to reach their full potential. With collective action and collaboration, Nigeria can achieve significant progress in promoting women’s empowerment and social development.
