Peter Akpe becomes Bayelsa deputy Governor

The Bayelsa State House of Assembly during plenary on Tuesday confirmed the nomination of Pastor Peter Pereotubo Akpe as the Deputy Governor of the state.

Akpe, who arrived at the Assembly complex to chants from supporters, was, in line with parliamentary tradition. asked by lawmakers to take a bow and leave in recognition of his previous service as a former Majority Leader of the House,

Before his nomination, Akpe served as Chief of Staff to Governor Douye Diri. A seasoned administrator and politician, he holds a PhD in Administration and Planning from the University of Port Harcourt.

His public service record includes roles as Head of Administration in the Office of the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Commissioner in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly Service Commission, Leader of the House, Deputy Chief of Staff, and Acting Chief of Staff at the Government House.

Beyond government service, Akpe is a pastor and part-time lecturer at the Redeemed Christian Bible College. He hails from Ebedebiri community in Sagbama Local Government Area, the same area as his predecessor.

The confirmation follows the death of former Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who collapsed in his office on December 11, 2025, while carrying out official duties.

He was initially admitted to the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa, later transferred to the Intensive Care Unit, and subsequently flown abroad for advanced medical treatment, where he was pronounced dead.

The late Deputy Governor was buried on Friday, January 30, 2026, at his hometown in Ofoni, Sagbama Local Government Area, following a four-day funeral programme approved by the Bayelsa State Government and his family.
