The House of Representatives Committee on Renewable Energy has held an investigative hearing to examine the domiciliation of green energy projects, as well as foreign grants and investments received in the renewable energy sector from 2015 to date. The hearing also assessed the utilisation of renewable energy across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the Federal Government.

Declaring the hearing open, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, emphasised the growing global shift towards cleaner energy sources.

“There is a global quest for safer, sustainable and renewable energy on account of the glaring impact of carbon emissions from fossil fuels on our environment,” Abbas said.

He urged MDAs and other stakeholders to view their participation in the hearing as a patriotic contribution to national development rather than an adversarial process.

“This fact-finding exercise aims to enhance systemic efficiency, uphold institutional integrity and promote Nigeria’s progress,” he added.

The Speaker noted that the transition to renewable energy is critical to addressing persistent electricity challenges, reducing the high cost of generator usage by businesses and households, and improving socio-economic development.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, represented at the hearing, also expressed support for the initiative.

“The information sector needs to latch on to renewable energy. Public enlightenment is key to achieving the renewable energy programme in Nigeria,” he stated, pledging the ministry’s platforms to support awareness efforts.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Committee on Renewable Energy, Afam Victor Ogene, outlined the committee’s mandate
