The Federal Government has thrown its weight behind the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) over its “Light Up the Nation” initiative, describing the programme as a vital step toward improving security, enhancing community aesthetics, and stimulating economic activities at the grassroots.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, gave the endorsement when the leadership and Board of Trustees of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja. The delegation was led by ALGON President, Iliyasu Zakari.

Details of the meeting were disclosed in a statement issued by Chris Ugwuegbulam, who explained that the initiative is designed not only to beautify communities but also to deter criminal activities through improved lighting across both urban and rural areas.

Akume described the initiative as timely, noting that adequate lighting would significantly improve safety while creating a more enabling environment for businesses to thrive. He also called for more details on the programme, indicating the Federal Government’s readiness to consider it for broader support.

The SGF further highlighted ongoing reforms by the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu aimed at strengthening local government administration.

According to him, increased attention to funding and operations at the grassroots marks a significant shift in governance.

“This is the first time the government at the centre has shown such deliberate commitment to the funding and functionality of local governments. It places a responsibility on local leaders to demonstrate discipline, accountability, and a people-centred approach,” he said.

On security, Akume stressed that local governments must take a frontline role, given their proximity to communities and their ability to detect early warning signs.

“You are directly affected by what happens in your communities. When suspicious individuals enter your environment, you are expected to identify and report them to the appropriate authorities. Local governments have a major role to play in strengthening security,” he added.

Earlier, Zakari reaffirmed ALGON’s commitment to implementing the “Light Up Nigeria 774” initiative, aimed at transforming all 774 local government areas in the country. He described the programme as a key component of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He also revealed that ALGON is finalising a comprehensive implementation framework, which will soon be presented to the Federal Government for review and possible support, pledging the association’s full alignment with efforts to drive development at the grassroots.
