Bello, Gbajabiamila differ on Abejide’s political future

By Mercy Aikoye

Former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, and the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, have offered differing advice to the lawmaker representing Yagba Federal Constituency, Leke Abejide, urging him to remain resolute in his political journey.

The two leaders spoke at a dinner held in Abuja to celebrate the 50th birthday of Abejide’s wife, Deaconess Esther Abejide, where they commended the lawmaker’s resilience, commitment to democracy, and role in party politics.

Bello described Abejide as a committed democrat who has consistently pursued his political ambitions despite setbacks. Recalling his early attempts to secure a seat in the House of Representatives, Bello noted that initial challenges, including what he termed “mathematical miscalculations,” did not deter him from returning stronger to win subsequent elections.

He further praised Abejide’s political maturity, noting that despite intense pressure to challenge electoral outcomes in court, the lawmaker chose to support the emergence of his successor, demonstrating loyalty and party discipline.

Bello also acknowledged Abejide’s cooperation with the current administration, despite his membership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), urging his constituents to consider his return to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In contrast, Gbajabiamila advised Abejide to remain in the ADC and continue strengthening the party. He commended the lawmaker’s ability to secure multiple electoral victories under the platform, describing it as a testament to his political strength and grassroots appeal.

Gbajabiamila urged him to stay and “fight” within the party, warning against defection. He stressed that maintaining his position in the ADC would further consolidate his political relevance and influence.

The Chief of Staff concluded by encouraging Abejide to remain steadfast, describing him as a determined political figure capable of overcoming challenges and sustaining his electoral success.
