The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said that ongoing rehabilitation works at the Amuwo 132/33kV Transmission Substation are progressing steadily and remain on schedule for completion in July 2026.
In a statement signed by its General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the company disclosed that installation of Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) equipment is currently underway, while two 60MVA power transformers have been delivered to replace the existing 30MVA units at the facility.
According to TCN, the upgrade will boost the substation’s capacity by an additional 60MVA, significantly improving power transmission to customers in the affected areas.
To minimise disruption during the rehabilitation, the company said it had earlier deployed two mobile transformers, enabling Eko and Ikeja Electricity Distribution Companies to continue power offtake and avoid a total blackout.
TCN noted that the overhaul would address persistent breakdowns and downtime linked to the ageing GIS infrastructure, thereby enhancing reliability and operational efficiency.
While acknowledging the inconvenience caused to electricity consumers, the company appealed for patience, assuring that the project is designed to deliver long-term benefits through improved power supply.
The transmission firm reiterated its commitment to expanding Nigeria’s transmission capacity in line with growing electricity demand across the country.
