From John Silas, Lagos

A tragic head-on collision on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos has claimed the life of a mother, while her 30-year-old daughter survived the devastating crash.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday at the Ilaje inward Iyana Oworo axis of the bridge, involved two Toyota Sienna vehicles with registration numbers LSR 809 GV and LSR 695 HM.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), in a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the fatal accident, attributing its severity to reckless driving, particularly excessive speeding.

According to the agency, LASTMA operatives on routine patrol swiftly responded to a distress alert from the scene, immediately deploying traffic control measures to prevent further incidents. Safety cones were strategically placed to secure the accident area and safeguard other road users.

Personnel from the Oworonsoki Police Division also arrived promptly, carrying out documentation of the incident and initiating necessary legal procedures.

The statement disclosed that the crash resulted in the death of an adult female, identified as a mother, while her daughter, who was in the same vehicle, survived the collision.

The remains of the deceased have since been evacuated by security operatives, while traffic officials, in collaboration with other emergency responders, maintained order at the scene to ensure the free flow of traffic and prevent secondary accidents.

In the aftermath of the crash, one of the drivers reportedly fled the scene. However, the other driver was apprehended by LASTMA officials and handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, reiterated the agency’s warning against reckless driving, emphasizing that over-speeding remains a leading cause of fatal road accidents.

He urged motorists to exercise caution, comply with speed regulations, and maintain strict road discipline to prevent avoidable tragedies on the nation’s highways.
