A new chapter opened for Ndigbo in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Sunday with the installation of Chief Peter Nnaji as Onowu in Idu-Koro. The ceremony was conducted under the new Ohaneze Ndigbo guideline for diaspora leadership.
In line with the law passed at Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide headquarters in Enugu, Igbo traditional rulers outside Igboland are no longer addressed as Eze but as Onyendu. The title means “leader” and reflects their role in the diaspora.
The installation was carried out by Onyendu Ndigbo in Idu-Koro, Chief Jude Davison Igwe, the Mmaejigbuagu. Chief Nnaji, from Akpugo Nkanu in Enugu State, now serves as his second-in-command.
Members of the Igbo Community Assembly (ICA), said the process followed due consultations and approval by community stakeholders. The title of Onowu is one of the highest in Igbo traditional administration.
Onyendu Igwe, while addressing journalists, said the new law will help distinguish Igbo kings at home from leaders in the diaspora. “We must respect our tradition while adapting to our reality outside Igboland,” he noted.
Chief Nnaji pledged to uphold the ethics of the office. “The Onowu must keep the rules of our tradition. I will work with our Onyendu to ensure peace and cultural promotion in Idu-Koro and the FCT,” he said.
The ceremony featured cultural displays that attracted residents from all walks of life. Masquerades, traditional dances and music turned the venue into a showcase of Igbo heritage.
Guests described the event as timely. “This shows that even far from home, we can still practice our culture. It is for all sons and daughters of Ndigbo,” one community leader said. Prayers were offered for unity and progress in Nigeria.
