APC Primaries: Abuja lawmaker loses reps return bid

By Daniel Tyokua

Abdulrahaman Ajiya, member representing Abuja South Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, has lost his return bid to Kwali Area Council Chairman Danladi Chiya in Saturday’s APC primary election.

Ajiya, who will complete his first term in the 10th National Assembly next year, was elected in 2023 to represent Abaji, Kwali, Gwagwalada, and Kuje Area Councils that make up Abuja South.

Chiya, who also serves as FCT Chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), defeated Ajiya, Abubakar Giri, and other contestants.

In Bwari Area Council, Chairman John Gabaya emerged winner of the AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency ticket.

Announcing the results on Saturday, Chairman of the FCT APC House of Representatives Primary Election Committee, Dr. Gogan Bans, said Chiya polled 14,639 votes. Gabaya scored 13,539 votes to win the AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency ticket.

In his acceptance speech, Chiya thanked his supporters and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for providing a level playing field that ensured peaceful primaries.

He assured party members and residents of Abuja South that, if elected, he would live up to expectations, and called on other aspirants to join hands with him to improve the constituency.

The APC primaries will continue on Monday with the senatorial primaries to select the party’s candidate for the FCT’s lone senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.
