The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals have intensified enforcement operations across the country as part of renewed efforts to rid the solid minerals sector of illegal activities and ensure strict compliance with mining regulations.
The specialised enforcement unit disclosed that its operational teams, particularly in the South-West, are making significant strides in enforcing mining laws and regulatory standards, reflecting the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting the nation’s mineral resources and eliminating illegal mining.
Established to support reforms in the solid minerals sector, the Mining Marshals play a key role in combating unlawful mining activities and promoting responsible resource exploitation across Nigeria.
Speaking on the renewed enforcement drive, Commander of the Mining Marshals, Assistant Commandant of Corps (ACC) John Onoja Attah, warned operators against violating mining regulations, stressing that offenders would be prosecuted regardless of any claim of ignorance.
“Ignorance of the law will never be an excuse. Every operator must ensure that mining activities are conducted within the ambit of the law. Those who choose to operate outside the regulatory framework will face the full weight of legal consequences,” he stated.
According to Attah, the ongoing crackdown is aimed at curbing illegal mining, protecting legitimate investors, boosting government revenue and restoring confidence in a sector that has suffered from years of regulatory breaches and economic sabotage.
He reiterated that lawful, safe and sustainable mining practices remain essential to unlocking the vast economic potential of Nigeria’s solid minerals industry.
The enforcement campaign aligns with the reform agenda of the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, which seeks to position the mining sector as a major driver of economic diversification and national growth through improved regulation, investor protection and the eradication of illegal mining.
Industry observers note that the renewed operation also reflects the strategic vision of the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, mni, OFR, whose administration has prioritised the protection of critical national assets and infrastructure. Under his leadership, institutional support for the Mining Marshals has been strengthened, making the unit a vital tool in the fight against illegal resource exploitation and revenue leakages.
The NSCDC reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with regulatory agencies and stakeholders to ensure Nigeria’s mineral resources are developed in accordance with the law and in a manner that benefits both the economy and future generations.
As enforcement operations gather momentum nationwide, the Mining Marshals have delivered a clear warning to operators: compliance with mining laws is mandatory, and violations will attract sanctions.
