Human rights activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to immediately remove from its official portal the names of candidates affected by the recent Supreme Court judgment on the Electoral Act.
In a statement on Monday, the activist said INEC is constitutionally bound to comply with the decision of the apex court, citing Section 287 subsection one of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, which provides for the enforcement of Supreme Court decisions by all authorities and persons.
Adeyanju urged the electoral commission to update its portal and other relevant records to reflect the effect of the Supreme Court judgment.
He stressed that the implementation should cover all political parties and candidates affected by the judgment, without selective application of the court’s decision.
According to him, INEC must take all necessary steps to ensure that its actions are consistent with the orders of the Supreme Court and the constitutional requirement to enforce decisions of the apex court.
Adeyanju therefore called on the commission to act without delay and take all necessary measures to ensure full compliance with the Supreme Court’s decision.
