The Federal Government has called on Nigerians to use the 66th Independence Anniversary to renew their commitment to national unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the call while congratulating Nigerians at home and abroad on the anniversary, according to a press release e-signed by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior on Wednesday.
According to him, peace and stability remain necessary conditions for the development of any nation, urging citizens to emulate the love of country demonstrated by Nigeria’s founding fathers.
Tunji-Ojo said Nigeria’s diversity should be regarded as a source of strength rather than division, stressing that collective determination remains essential to building a stronger and more prosperous country.
“As we celebrate 66 years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and our diversity is our strength, and our collective determination remains the foundation upon which a stronger and more prosperous nation will be built,” he said.
The Minister described Nigeria as a country endowed with abundant human and natural resources, adding that the warmth, welcoming spirit and love of Nigerians constitute important national assets.
He expressed confidence that a new Nigeria is achievable and said the Federal Government, through the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, remains committed to improving the lives of citizens.
Tunji-Ojo further assured Nigerians that the administration would continue efforts to strengthen national security and improve public safety.
He said the government was also committed to creating an environment where Nigerians could live, work and pursue their legitimate aspirations with confidence.
The Minister urged Nigerians to make the anniversary a period for reflection and renewed dedication to the nation, particularly in honour of the country’s heroes past.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark the nation’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior on behalf of the Federal Government.
