The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has sensitized telecom consumers on the need to protect themselves from financial losses.
Leading a road walk show on the streets of Abuja to mark 2022 World Consumer Rights Day on Tuesday, the Senior Manager Consumer Affairs, Margret Amaku said there was the need for consumers to know their rights and how to uphold them.
She explained that it was necessary for protection because, more people were signing up for digital financial services like banking, insurance, and investment management.
“The theme of this year’s World Consumer Rights Day, as announced by Consumer International, calls for stakeholders to do more in protecting consumers and keeping them informed.
“However, some of these consumers must cope with vulnerabilities in using digital financial services.
“These challenges of adapting to digital platforms for transactions are further worsened by unscrupulous people that exploit consumer vulnerabilities for illicit gains”.
She explained that despite the challenges, the commission was also working hard to bring in those who lack access to digital platforms for now.
The Manager Consumer Affairs, however, noted that an increase in infrastructure would increase digital inclusion and enable the country to achieve its 80 per cent digital inclusion in the next four years.
Amaku called on the consumers to always adhere to NCC guidelines on protecting them from unnecessary losses through charges from unsolicited messages.
The work show which started at the commission,s headquarters in Maitama to Banex plaza, Wuse II and GSM village ended at Gwarimpa.
