Rotary International has organised a knowledge based programme for female students of Community Secondary School Nkpolu- Oroworukwo, Community Secondary School Abuloma and Methodist Girls High School, Harbour Road in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The Rotary Club of Port Harcourt-South in Partnership with Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Nkpolu Rivers State University, Rotaract clubs (PH-Township,Silver Valley & RSU) held the empowerment programme in commemoration of the International Day of the Girl-Child.
Speaking on the programme, Ele Edachaba, Assistant Governor of Zone 25, said the programme tends to empower and brought out the feminine potentials.
Edachabe who represented Mightyman Aye Dikuro, District Governor (DG) Rotary International District 9141 said “As rotarians we realized the need to invest in girls and we must continue to support the development of the girl child’.
She stressed “As girls we understand that they have right, they have potentials and they have roles in the society. They must understand the unique challenges that girls faces all over the world and must work extra hard to break those barriers.
“There are so many women and indeed young girls who are doing great things all over the world, who have worked so hard to attend such feat. And this is exactly what we want for our young girls today”.
Similarly, 40th President Rotary Club Of Port Harcourt South, Bara Alagoma, noted that the purpose of the project was to elevate the girl child empowerment
Alagoma boasted “We have noticed the way the girl child is being treated, majority of them don’t even know their rights, they don’t know their purpose, so we came together decided to give these girls a little more knowledge, empowering them mentally to know their worth and what they can achieve, be able to stand tall in the society.
“The girl child needs to have a sense of belonging in our society and beyond. My club and every other partnering the project intend to give these girls a sense of direction”, Alagoma added.
Meanwhile, Barr Grace Adikema Ajaegbo and Martina Nwanyanwu lectured the students on the theme “The Girl-Child: Empowerment and the Knowledge of her Potentials*”
