Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa the chairman Nigerians in diaspora commission, has cautioned the youths against irregular migration.
Dabiri-Erewa gave the warning while speaking to newsmen at the world press conference towards the 2024 National Diaspora day with the theme ‘Japa Phenomena and its Implications for National Development’.
She lamented that the youths especially have become very attracted to the Japa syndrome with its attendant effect on the economy which necessitated devoting the Diaspora day to addressing it
‘Factors such as economic instability, security concerns, and inadequate standard of living are ranked high among reasons for the exodus of Nigerians abroad. The consequence of this phenomenon is the decline of strong human resources because most of the Nigerians relocating are the youths. This in turn, makes a downward turn on labour and productivity in the country”.
According to her, the two day event coming up on the 25th and 26th of July which will be declared open by the President will feature celebrity interviews, National Diaspora Merit awards and discussions on investment among others.
Dabiri-Erewa said celebrating the achievement of those in diaspora will encourage others to be of good behaviour.
Registration for the event can be done on nidcom.gov.ng/diasporaday2024/.
