The Catholic Bishop of Gboko Diocese, Most Reverend William Avenya, has urged the Governing Council of Akperan Orshi Polytechnic (AOPOLY), Yandev, to work diligently towards restoring the institution’s former prestige as a leading educational establishment in Benue State and Nigeria at large.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Council, led by Dr. Victoria Pillah, on Friday, Bishop Avenya emphasized the need for AOPOLY to be revitalized and strategically positioned to reclaim its status, particularly in the areas of agricultural innovation and skills development.
He highlighted the importance of positioning the polytechnic not only as a centre for academic excellence but also as a contributor to the material and spiritual growth of both staff and students.
The Bishop stressed that the Council and staff must cultivate a strong will and adopt the right mindset to enhance skilled manpower and expand opportunities within the institution.
Recalling the polytechnic’s rich agricultural history from its days as a College of Agriculture, where it was known for producing various seeds and seedlings, Bishop Avenya noted that AOPOLY’s new status as a polytechnic should not overshadow its legacy in agricultural advancements.
He urged the Council to make the institution a hub for both learning and research.
The Bishop also pointed out the significance of the Diocese’s ongoing support for AOPOLY, which is reflected in the assignment of a priest to cater to the spiritual needs of the school community.
In her remarks, Dr. Pillah, the Council Chairman, acknowledged the importance of seeking divine guidance and protection in their endeavours, which was the motivation behind their visit to the Bishop.
She expressed confidence that Bishop Avenya, as a key stakeholder, would continue to offer valuable support and guidance to the institution.
Dr. Simon Iorchor, the Rector of AOPOLY, who also spoke during the visit, highlighted plans to involve the Diocese in the proposed Guidance, Counselling, and Career Development unit, which aims to enhance character development and spiritual growth within the institution.
The visit concluded with prayers and blessings for the Governing Council members, who were encouraged to work collaboratively to fulfill the institution’s mandate.
The delegation led by Dr. Pillah included Mrs. Theresa Ikwue, Mr. Samuel Agwa, Mr. Joseph Adi, and Mr. Nicholas Ugalahi.
