Idu traditional ruler begs FCT water board to restore supply

By Abbanobi -Eku Onyekachi

The chief of Idu in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Muhammad Makama has urged the Federal Capital Territory water board to restore supply in the area.

Idu, the host community of Industrial area in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), along with surrounding villages, has been cut off from water supply for some days, leaving the residents in a sorry state.

He appealed to the board to evolve measures that will curb the situation from getting out of hand as residents are running out of patience.

Checks by The AUTHORITY in the area, revealed that the disruption is caused by the ongoing road constructions in Life Camp junction.

However, the chief said, “We’ve been enjoying uninterrupted water supply until now,” Chief Makama lamented.

“But with the current shortage, our people have no choice but to rely on water from natural sources and boreholes, while appealing for alternative solutions to ensure access to pipe-borne water for his community.

This crisis comes on the heels of a delayed Abuja project, which has left 3.8 million residents struggling for clean water. The FCT Water Board has also announced a two-day cut in water supply to major areas of Abuja.

Residents are bearing the brunt of this crisis, with many forced to seek alternative, often unhygienic, sources of water. This poses serious health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations like the elderly, pregnant women, and children.

Makama’s plea echoes the sentiments of many affected residents. The authorities must prioritize restoring the water supply and exploring sustainable solutions to prevent such disruptions in the future.

As the situation unfolds, one thing is clear: the people of Idu and surrounding villages deserve access to clean, reliable water. Will the authorities heed the call and take decisive action? Only time will tell.
