Nigeria determined to end gas flaring – Ekpo

The Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo has once again reiterated the determination of Nigerian to end gas flaring.

The Minister stated this in an interview with Nigerian Journalists at the ongoing COP29 In Baku Azerbaijan.

He said his outing at the climate talks have been positive, having had discussions with foreign counterpart.

Ekpo said success story have been recorded in a bid to end gas flaring and tackle emissions in the oil and gas sector.

He reiterated compliance with the Miane emission pledge, which Nigeria is a signatory to.

He noted the challenges of developing infrastructure to utilize flared gas and make it useful.

Ekpo solicited the support of the European Commission to finance infrastructure needed to make Nigeria gas sector at par with other developing nation.

The percentage of gas flared in Nigeria has been reducing since 2002 and stood at 10% in 2018. The country still ranks in the top 10 gas flaring countries in the world, with 7.4 billion cubic feet in 2018. Total gas flared in Nigeria accounted for 6.9% of the top 10 gas glaring countries in 2018
