Oluwasegun Alabi, Chairman and CEO of Davidorlah Nigeria Limited, a leading agricultural firm, has called on the Federal Government to prioritize agriculture as a key driver of economic growth.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Alabi emphasized that by placing agriculture at the center of its agenda, the government can tackle pressing challenges such as food insecurity, unemployment, and economic diversification, ultimately achieving sustainable economic development and reducing reliance on oil.
Alabi emphasized the importance of agriculture in Nigeria’s economy, noting that it was the country’s major source of foreign earnings before the discovery of oil. He advocated for more farmers, stating that massive food production would not only address food insecurity but also encourage young Nigerians who have left the country in search of greener pastures to return home.
The CEO highlighted some workable strategies the firm has employed in recent times, leading to massive food production. He defined agriculture as the process of producing food, animal feed, and timber for industries, emphasizing that it is the lifeblood of man and the cornerstone of all development.
Alabi expressed concern that Nigeria, despite being the most populous black nation, is plagued by famine and food shortages. He wondered why the country, with its vast human and material resources, cannot produce enough food for its population.
The firm also advised the Federal Government to address pressing issues such as food insecurity by engaging the right farmers in the agricultural sector, rather than “political farmers” who are only interested in making money. Alabi emphasized that their pineapple farms have produced high-quality fruits for several years and invited prospective investors to visit their farm.
In addition, the firm is open to partnerships and collaborations with government agencies and private individuals to ensure adequate food production across the country and beyond. Alabi believes that with the right support, agriculture can become a major driver of Nigeria’s economy.
The firm’s call for the Federal Government to prioritize agriculture comes at a time when the country is grappling with food insecurity and economic challenges. Alabi’s appeal is a timely reminder of the importance of agriculture in addressing these challenges and promoting economic growth.
By prioritizing agriculture and supporting farmers, Nigeria can increase food production, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth. As Alabi noted, “when food is produced massively in the country, most young men and women who have gone in search of greener pastures in foreign lands will have no alternative but to return to their fatherland.”
