The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has unveiled plans to transform the abandoned recreation park at Life Camp near the official residence of the minister into a world-class leisure and sports centre.
He said the initiative would extend the FCT Administration’s urban renewal programme beyond roads and public buildings.
Wike stated this after inspecting the neglected park on Monday, saying the proposed redevelopment comes on the heels of the successful remodelling of the Abuja City Gate, which has emerged as one of the capital’s most visited public landmarks.
The minister said the administration is resolved to invest in green spaces and recreational facilities that would improve the quality of life for Abuja residents.
He explained that the City Gate project had proved the value of revitalising public spaces, saying the once-overlooked entrance into the capital had become a thriving attraction for visitors both day and night.
Wike said, the administration is determined to replicate that success at Life Camp by converting the abandoned site into a modern recreation hub where residents can exercise, relax, take photographs and spend quality time with their families.
He regretted that the facility had remained neglected despite its enormous potential, describing the situation as a missed opportunity for successive administrations.
He said the FCT Administration had already been directed to begin work on a new design for the park, stressing that the project would be handled as an emergency to fast-track its delivery.
The minister added that reputable firms would be invited to submit competing designs, with the administration selecting the best proposal capable of meeting international standards.
Wike said the location offered immense potential for a landmark recreational destination that would rival facilities in major cities around the world.
He also disclosed plans to stage an annual New Year fireworks display at the Abuja City Gate beginning this year, saying the initiative is intended to position Abuja alongside leading global capitals known for ushering in the New Year with colourful public celebrations.
Wike said the Tinubu administration remained committed to providing modern recreational infrastructure and greener public spaces, insisting that residents deserve facilities that enhance their well-being and promote a healthier lifestyle.
