Wike inspects road projects in rural communities

By Daniel Tyokua

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike has inspected additional road projects in rural communities under the “Opening Up the Satellite Towns” initiative.

Wike toured the 13-kilometre Yangoji–Gomani road in Kwali on Thursday as part of ongoing inspections to ensure contractors deliver quality work across the territory.

He said the project is transforming the Yangoji–Gomani road into a key economic artery linking Abuja’s urban centre with the rural areas of Kwali. The work includes a newly completed bridge, drainage systems that are 90–95% complete, and ongoing installation of streetlights.

According to Wike, the initiative aims to end the isolation of rural communities, curb rural-urban migration, and open up satellite towns for economic activity. The road is scheduled for inauguration in June 2026 to mark the President’s third year in office.

“Development is now reaching all the satellite towns,” Wike said. “When Mr. President comes here, it will be a thing of joy for him to see.”

He described the project as a mission of socio-economic liberation for rural dwellers and a key part of the President’s mandate to address rural-urban migration.

The new bridge now connects previously isolated communities across water bodies, while improved drainage is expected to prevent seasonal flooding that often disrupts transport. Streetlight installations are also underway to improve nighttime safety and support commerce.

“For the people of Kwali and surrounding settlements, this road means more than easier travel,” Wike said. “It represents the arrival of ‘Renewed Hope’ through trade access, improved security, and the integration of rural voices into the FCT’s development story.”
