The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has disbursed a total sum of three hundred million (N300milliom) to 16, 224 students for 2023/2024 scholarship award session.
The beneficiaries drawn from basic, post-basic and tertiary institutions are indigents students in the Federal Capital Territory.
Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike disclosed this during the flag-off ceremony of the exercise at the scholarship Board office, Thursday.
Wike who was represented by his chief of staff, Chidi Amadi, said the figure was an improvement from last session’s award.
The minister stated that education was the bedrock of any development, saying his administration would continue to attach more importance to the scholarship scheme so as to provide educational services to the needy.
He appealed to teachers not to be discouraged when resources are not sufficient, advising them to continue to make the best out of what they have.
In his remarks, the mandate Secretary, FCT Education Secretariat, Dr Danlami Hayyo, commended the Minister for his commitment to education in the Territory.
He disclosed that under Wike, more than ₦230 billion has so far been invested into education capital projects, especially on rehabilitation and construction of new schools and other educational facilities across all the Six Area Councils.
On her part, Director of the Board, Mrs. Hannah David, revealed that the Board, since inception in 2020, has supported education of 146,000 FCT indigenes and indigents, many of whom are doing well in different fields.
According to her, the scholarship support scheme covers basic, post-basic, special need centres, Nigerian Law School, and foreign tertiary institutions, cutting across all categories of students, including special needs ones, who are also given wheel chairs and other materials.
