Gov Ododo reaffirms commitment to press freedom as NUJ marks 70 years

As the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) celebrates its 70th anniversary, Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has pledged his administration’s continued support for a free and independent press.

In a congratulatory message, Governor Ododo lauded the NUJ’s contributions to democracy, good governance, and national development over the past seven decades. He emphasized the media’s vital role in ensuring transparency and holding leaders accountable.

“For seventy years, the NUJ has been at the forefront of promoting responsible journalism, defending press freedom, and shaping public discourse. A free and independent press is the foundation of a thriving democracy, and my administration remains committed to creating an enabling environment where journalists can operate without fear or intimidation,” a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Ismaila Isah, quoted the governor to have said.

The governor also commended journalists for their resilience in delivering credible information despite various challenges. He encouraged media professionals to uphold ethical standards, combat misinformation, and embrace technological advancements to enhance their work.

Governor Ododo assured journalists in Kogi State of his government’s unwavering support in strengthening the press as a force for positive change. He urged the NUJ to remain steadfast in promoting journalistic integrity and professionalism.

“As we celebrate this milestone, I commend the leadership and members of the NUJ for their steadfast commitment to truth and accountability. I am confident that the union will continue to set high standards in journalism, contributing to the progress of our great nation,” he added.

The governor extended his best wishes to the NUJ, expressing hope for its continued success in advancing a free and responsible press.
