Here’s a female leader making her mark in a male dominated field. Comrade Grace Ike is multi-talented and proudly first female Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council after 41 years of its establishment.

In this interview with Stellamaries Amuwa, she described her happiest moments as seeing her union members succeed, whether through successful events, secured welfare wins, or young journalists breaking stories.

Briefly tell us about yourself.

My name is Grace Ike, the proud first female Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council after 41 years of its establishment. With over 15 years experience in media, from ITV to Silverbird, ADBN TV, I’ve risen through the ranks as a dedicated journalist, advocate, and leader. Today, I champion journalists’ welfare, press freedom, and women’s empowerment in our profession, all while organizing impactful events like Press Week to celebrate our stories as well as trainings

What inspired you into vying for NUJ FCT chairman?

My inspiration came from years of witnessing the struggles of FCT journalists, welfare gaps, safety risks, and underrepresentation of women in leadership. As a unionist , I felt a calling to break barriers, uplift members, and drive real change, especially after leading successful advocacy campaigns.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years, I envision myself as a National leader or media policy influencer, mentoring the next generation of journalists. I’ll have expanded welfare programs like health insurance for members and launched platforms amplifying women’s voices in African media.

What’s your driving force?

My driving force is resilience, the unyielding spirit of Nigerian journalists who tell truth to power despite odds. It’s fueled by my faith, family, and a commitment to equity, pushing me to turn challenges into triumphs for my union.

What makes you happy?

Seeing my union members thrive. whether through successful events, secured welfare wins, or young journalists breaking stories.

How do you as the first female NUJ FCT chairman balance your work and the need for your union members?

Balance comes from delegation, empathy, and smart systems. I prioritize listening tours and welfare committees to address members’ needs directly, while streamlining council operations with digital tools. Family time and self care keep me grounded, ensuring I lead with energy and fairness.

What is your philosophy?

“Service with strength”, lead boldly, serve humbly, and lift others as you rise. It’s about ethical journalism, unity in diversity, and empowering women without apology.

How would you describe your personal style? And where do you find your inspiration?

My style is “power professional with cultural flair”, tailored suits in vibrant African prints, statement jewelry, and heels that say “ready to lead.” Inspiration flows from Nigerian designers like Lisa Folawiyo, global icons like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and the vibrant street style of Abuja markets.

What are some current fashion trends you love or hate?

I love sustainable upcycling and bold power shoulders. I also love buba outfits . All covered or a flowing dress . They empower and echo African heritage.

How do you define sustainable fashion?

Sustainable fashion means ethical, eco-conscious choices using local fabrics, supporting artisans, minimizing waste, and favoring timeless pieces over trends. It’s about fashion that honors our planet and communities, much like responsible journalism honors truth.

What does fashion mean to you?

Fashion, to me, is more than clothes, it’s a powerful tool for self expression, confidence, and cultural storytelling.

As a female leader in a male dominated field, it helps me command respect while staying true to my Nigerian roots, blending bold Ankara prints with modern tailoring.
