Former governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau, has again defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a move that signals a significant shift in the state’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Shekarau formally announced his return to the APC on Sunday, stating that his decision followed extensive consultations with political allies and supporters across Kano State.
The former governor said his defection was driven by the need to align with a platform that, in his view, offers a more viable path for political relevance and development.
“After careful reflection and wide consultations, I have decided to return to the APC. This decision is in the best interest of my supporters and the people of Kano State,” Shekarau said.
He noted that while his time in the PDP was marked by valuable political engagement, the current realities within the party made it necessary for him to reconsider his position.
“I remain grateful to the PDP for the opportunity to serve and contribute, but the time has come to move forward in a direction that better serves the aspirations of my people,” he added.
Welcoming him back into the ruling party, Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, described Shekarau’s return as a major boost for the APC in the state.
“This is a significant moment for our party in Kano. Senator Shekarau is a seasoned politician and a respected leader whose experience will strengthen our collective efforts,” the governor said.
He assured the former governor and his supporters of full integration into the APC structure, urging party members to work together in unity.
“The APC remains open to all who are committed to the progress of our state. We will work together to build a stronger and more inclusive political platform,” he added.
Party stakeholders at the event described the defection as a strategic development that could reshape political alignments in Kano, especially as parties begin to position themselves for upcoming electoral contests.
Shekarau’s return to the APC may influence political calculations in the state, given his longstanding influence and grassroots support base and his long standing political disagreement with former governor Ibrahim Kwankwaso who is in the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
