Former federal lawmaker, Nicholas Ossai, has praised the All Progressives Congress (APC) for adopting direct primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing the move as a significant step toward strengthening participatory democracy and internal party transparency.
Ossai made this known shortly after submitting his nomination forms to contest for the Ndokwa East/Ndokwa West/Ukwuani Federal Constituency seat in Delta State.
Addressing the issue, the former lawmaker said the direct primary model places decision-making power directly in the hands of party members, allowing them to determine who emerges as the party’s flag bearer.
According to him, the system remains one of the most credible and democratic methods of candidate selection.
“The most democratic aspect of the electoral process is the direct primary system,” Ossai stated.
He explained that beyond enhancing inclusiveness, direct primaries also serve as a practical test of an aspirant’s grassroots popularity and acceptance among party faithful.
Ossai noted that the APC leadership, including its National Working Committee, has demonstrated commitment to the reform, citing recent remarks by the party’s national chairman in support of the process.
He described the decision as a progressive move capable of deepening internal democracy and fostering fairness within the ruling party.
The former lawmaker further argued that candidates who emerge through direct primaries often enjoy stronger legitimacy and broader support.
“Whoever emerges victorious enjoys the confidence and goodwill of party members,” he said.
Expressing confidence in his political standing, Ossai said he remains optimistic about his support base across Ndokwa East, Ndokwa West, and Ukwuani constituencies.
He added that there is greater fulfilment when candidates secure mandates directly from the people rather than through indirect arrangements.
Clarifying his political ambition, Ossai stated that his focus is on returning to the House of Representatives, also known as the Green Chamber, rather than contesting for a Senate seat.
“I have the desire to return to the Green Chamber to address the pressing needs of my people,” he said.
He pointed to his previous legislative achievements and constituency projects as evidence of his readiness to serve again.
Reflecting on his defection to the APC, Ossai predicted a continued decline of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State, insisting that the ruling party represents a platform for political transformation and renewed leadership.
He described the APC’s broom symbol as a representation of revolution, reform, and national progress.
Highlighting his legislative experience, Ossai said his parliamentary record remains his strongest credential.
“My ‘resume’ speaks for me,” he noted, recalling how he earned the nickname “Legislative Metro” during his time in the National Assembly.
