The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that the Federal Government has suspended students’ upkeep allowance payments under the student loan scheme.
In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, the Fund described the publications as “false and misleading,” warning Nigerians against falling victim to misinformation being spread online.
NELFUND specifically debunked a purported statement attributed to the agency as well as an alleged front page of a national newspaper, describing both as fabricated and AI-generated content aimed at creating panic among students and beneficiaries.
“The reports currently circulating across social media and online platforms alleging that the Federal Government has suspended students’ upkeep allowance payments under the student loan scheme are entirely FAKE, misleading, and designed to create panic, confusion, and distrust among beneficiaries and the general public,” the statement, signed by Mrs. Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, Director of Strategic Communications, said.
The agency stressed that neither the Federal Government nor NELFUND had issued any directive suspending upkeep allowance payments.
According to the Fund, “No directive has been issued by the Federal Government or NELFUND regarding the suspension of upkeep allowances.”
It further clarified that the publications “did not originate from NELFUND or any authorized government channel,” adding that the newspaper cover being circulated “is AI-generated and does not represent a genuine publication.”
NELFUND reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the transparent disbursement of student loans and upkeep support in line with its mandate.
The agency urged beneficiaries, stakeholders, students, and parents to rely only on verified information released through its official communication channels and credible media organisations.
It also cautioned members of the public against sharing unverified content capable of spreading misinformation and causing unnecessary anxiety nationwide.
“The Fund remains steadfast in its commitment to expanding access to higher education and supporting Nigerian students through sustainable financing initiatives,” the statement added.
