The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has dismissed a publication by the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDP) concerning an outage at the Lekki Transmission Substation, saying the report contained misleading information about the incident.
TCN, in a statement signed by its Management on Thursday, said contrary to EKEDP’s claim that its T11 transformer tripped unexpectedly and was awaiting inspection, the incident involved the simultaneous tripping of EKEDP’s Oniru 33kV and Agungi 33kV feeders at 4:34 a.m. on August 26, 2026.
According to the transmission company, the feeders tripped due to overcurrent and earth fault, resulting in the inter-tripping of the primary and secondary breakers of TCN’s TR1 60MVA, 132/33kV transformer.
It said the incident was accompanied by a heavy bang and smoke.
TCN said its maintenance crew responded promptly, rehabilitated the damaged secondary breaker and restored both the primary and secondary breakers later the same day.
However, the company explained that when EKEDP attempted to close its Oniru feeder on trial, the same relay indications triggered another trip, requiring additional corrective work.
The transmission company stressed that no outage occurred on TCN’s T11 transformer as claimed by EKEDP, maintaining that the incident was strictly related to EKEDP’s Oniru and Agungi 33kV feeders.
“TCN’s technical team has been on-site, working assiduously to restore supply within the shortest possible time,” the statement said.
TCN assured electricity consumers affected by the incident that it was actively addressing the fault and regretted the inconvenience caused.
The company also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the transmission network and putting in place a more robust system. END
