As Nigerian consumers increasingly embrace smart home technology and connected entertainment, LG Electronics has reaffirmed its commitment to providing Smart TV experiences that combine convenience, personalization, security and customer control.
The company said its Smart TVs have evolved beyond traditional television viewing, offering features such as voice-enabled searches, personalized recommendations, device connectivity and smart home integration.
According to LG, these innovations are designed with transparency, user choice and privacy protection in mind.
Customers remain in control
LG said features including voice recognition, Automatic Content Recognition (ACR), personalized recommendations and interest-based advertising are optional and require users to actively opt in before they are activated.
Customers can review permissions, adjust settings or withdraw consent through their TV settings without affecting basic functions such as watching live television, streaming content, connecting devices or receiving software updates.
“Technology should work for people, not the other way around,” LG Electronics said, adding that its goal is to provide meaningful customer choice while delivering smarter and more personalized entertainment experiences.
Voice recognition designed for convenience
Addressing concerns around voice-enabled technology, LG said voice control on its Smart TVs is disabled by default and becomes active only when users choose to enable it.
The company explained that users can initiate voice commands by pressing the microphone button on the remote or, on compatible models, by enabling hands-free voice control.
LG said its Smart TVs do not continuously record conversations or store ambient household discussions.
According to the company, when hands-free voice control is enabled, the television listens locally for a specific wake word. Audio that does not contain the wake word is processed on the device and immediately discarded without being stored or transmitted.
Once a voice command is completed, the voice recognition session automatically ends, LG said.
ACR remains optional
LG also highlighted Automatic Content Recognition (ACR), an optional feature designed to help improve content discovery and viewing experiences by identifying content being watched from supported sources.
The company said ACR is turned off by default and requires users to accept separate agreements before it can be activated.
LG clarified that ACR does not collect screenshots, screen recordings, video captures or voice recordings. Instead, the company said it uses audio fingerprinting technology to recognize content without storing visual or audio media from users’ televisions.
Personalized advertising services, it added, require separate user approval.
Easier connectivity across the home
With Nigerian households increasingly using gaming consoles, streaming devices, decoders, home entertainment systems and connected appliances, LG said its Smart TVs are designed to make device connectivity easier.
According to the company, device discovery technology allows compatible devices such as set-top boxes, gaming consoles, DVD players and IoT-enabled products to communicate with Smart TVs.
LG said information collected to support device connectivity is used to facilitate those connections and is not used for household profiling or targeted advertising without additional user consent.
Security remains a priority
LG said cybersecurity remains an important part of its Smart TV ecosystem and that it continues to strengthen protection measures across its platform.
The company operates a global Bug Bounty Programme and works with independent security researchers to identify and address potential vulnerabilities.
LG also encouraged customers to install the latest software updates to maintain security and device performance.
The company said eligible TV models currently receive security updates for up to five years from the initial release of the applicable webOS platform version.
Focus on Nigerian consumers
As streaming services, live sports, local content platforms, gaming and connected-home technology become increasingly popular in Nigeria, LG said consumers are looking for convenience without compromising privacy.
The company maintained that trust will remain essential to the future of connected entertainment and said it would continue working to strengthen privacy safeguards, improve security measures and simplify customer controls.
LG reaffirmed its commitment to delivering Smart TV experiences that are innovative and personalized while remaining secure, transparent and responsive to the needs of modern consumers.
