The Chinese community in Nigeria has donated eight laptops to teachers as part of its efforts to support education and strengthen people-to-people relations between Nigeria and China.
This was made known by a member of the Chinese community, Zhao Ming, during activities marking the 2026 World Teachers’ Day on Monday in Abuja.
Zhao described the gesture as a practical expression of appreciation for teachers and their contribution to national development.
He described teachers as the backbone of society, noting that their influence extends beyond the classroom to the development of knowledge, values and the next generation of citizens.
He said his appreciation of the teaching profession was also personal, recalling that both his mother and grandfather were teachers.
According to him, the contribution of teachers to national development makes it important for individuals, communities and organisations to provide them with the necessary support and tools to carry out their responsibilities effectively.
The eight laptops were therefore presented to teachers as part of the community’s contribution to the celebration, with the initiative also reflecting its wider interest in supporting education in Nigeria.
Zhao recalled previous interventions by members of the Chinese community in support of Nigerian schools, including the provision of educational materials and participation in tree-planting activities.
He said the latest initiative was intended not merely as a celebration of teachers, but also as a contribution towards improving the education sector and deepening ties between Nigerians and members of the Chinese community.
The gesture coincided with the 2026 World Teachers’ Day, celebrated globally on October 5.
The AUTHORITY reports that the 2026 observance marks 60 years since the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, an international framework covering teachers’ rights and responsibilities, professional preparation, recruitment, employment and working conditions.
The global theme for the 2026 celebration is “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures.” The observance places emphasis on the need for governments, policymakers and society to strengthen the status of teachers and address challenges confronting the profession, including changing technological demands, workload, working conditions and limited professional support.
