Hill Station Hotel Reopens as Hillside Hospitality Unveils Phase One in Jos

The historic Hill Station Hotel in Jos, Plateau State, has reopened its doors to guests following the completion of the first phase of an extensive redevelopment programme by Hillside Hospitality Limited.

The hotel, which was established in 1938, commenced a soft opening on October 1, 2026, ahead of its formal commissioning by Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, expected to take place in the coming weeks.

Hillside Hospitality Limited is undertaking the redevelopment and operation of the property after leasing the hotel from Hill Station Hotel Limited, in partnership with the Plateau State Government.

The reopening is expected to provide a boost to Plateau State’s tourism and hospitality sector while restoring one of Jos’ best-known hospitality landmarks to commercial use.

Reviving a historic landmark

Hill Station Hotel has occupied a prominent place in Nigeria’s hospitality history since its establishment in 1938. Over the decades, the facility has hosted business leaders, international visitors and dignitaries, including the late Queen Elizabeth II.

The redevelopment seeks to preserve the heritage of the property while introducing modern hospitality facilities and services designed to meet contemporary expectations.

According to Hillside Hospitality, the first phase of the project covers significant improvements to the hotel’s architecture, interiors, accommodation, dining facilities, wellness and recreational offerings, as well as business and conference facilities.

The company said the objective is to create a contemporary hospitality destination while retaining the character associated with Hill Station Hotel over the decades.

Investment expected to create jobs

The redevelopment has also generated employment and business opportunities in Plateau State.

Hillside Hospitality said more than 1,500 Plateau indigenes were engaged during the construction and redevelopment of Phase One.

With the first phase now operational, the hotel directly employs more than 80 people from the state. The company said direct employment is expected to rise to more than 200 workers when the hotel reaches full capacity and subsequent phases are completed.

The project is also generating demand for agricultural products, food, essential supplies and other services. According to the company, this supply chain is currently supporting more than 1,000 indirect livelihoods and economic opportunities across Jos and the wider Plateau metropolis.

The company expects these opportunities to expand as the hotel increases its operating capacity.

Hotel positioned as tourism gateway

Beyond accommodation, Hillside Hospitality said it plans to position Hill Station Hotel as a gateway to Plateau State’s broader tourism economy.

The company intends to develop partnerships involving tourism, transportation, food, culture, adventure and other local experiences to encourage visitors to explore destinations across the state.

The renewed facility is also expected to strengthen Jos as a destination for conferences, corporate retreats, business meetings, off-site programmes, incentive travel and leisure.

Plateau Government welcomes private-sector investment

For the Plateau State Government, the redevelopment represents an example of how private investment can help return underutilised strategic assets to productive economic use.

The partnership with Hillside Hospitality is expected to contribute to employment generation, tourism development and increased commercial activity within the state.

Governor Mutfwang is expected to formally commission the redeveloped facility in the coming weeks, marking another milestone in the return of Hill Station Hotel to active operations.

Hillside Hospitality expands its portfolio

For Hillside Hospitality Limited, the reopening of Hill Station Hotel forms part of its broader expansion within Nigeria’s hospitality, real estate and leisure sectors.

The company described the project as both a flagship investment and part of its strategy to participate in the development of destination-based hospitality in Nigeria.

With the reopening, Hill Station Hotel is set to begin a new chapter, combining its long-standing heritage with modern hospitality services while contributing to tourism, employment and local economic activity in Plateau State.
