The House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream) has expressed confidence in the leadership of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), pledging continued legislative support for reforms aimed at improving regulation and efficiency in the petroleum sector.

The committee, chaired by Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, said sustained cooperation between the National Assembly and the regulatory authority was essential to implementing the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), protecting consumers and promoting a stable and competitive petroleum market.

In a statement signed by Ugochinyere, the lawmakers said effective regulatory oversight, transparency and accountability remained critical to addressing challenges in the midstream and downstream petroleum industry.

The committee’s vote of confidence in the authority, led by its Chief Executive, Mallam Rabiu Abdullahi Umar, reflects its support for ongoing efforts to strengthen regulatory institutions and improve the performance of the petroleum value chain.

It noted that continued reforms were necessary to enhance operational efficiency, attract investment and rebuild public confidence in the regulation of the sector.

The lawmakers also commended the NMDPRA leadership for its engagement with the legislature, stressing that regular consultations between both institutions would promote accountability and ensure that regulatory policies align with national economic priorities.

According to the committee, effective oversight would remain a key instrument for ensuring that the authority discharges its statutory responsibilities in the interest of Nigerians.

It added that constructive engagement among government institutions and industry stakeholders was necessary to address emerging concerns, improve service delivery and create a more transparent and sustainable petroleum industry.

The committee urged stakeholders to sustain their cooperation in advancing reforms that promote economic growth, safeguard consumer interests and strengthen the competitiveness of the sector.

It reaffirmed its readiness to work with the NMDPRA and other relevant institutions to strengthen regulatory effectiveness and ensure that the gains of ongoing reforms translate into tangible benefits for Nigerians.
