ISAAC OJO writes that sixty years old Mrs Regina Nnoruka from Umuazikegbe Umeangwa Abuchi village in Ukpor in Nnewi South local government area of Anambra state has appealed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Sen Ifeanyi Ubah and Hon Chris Azubogu to help secure the release of her son Romanus Nnoruka who is suffering unjustly in the custody of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Nnewi.
Mrs Nnoruka who stormed the Nnewi office of the Authority Newspaper in company of the coordinator for Corruption Watch, a human rights organization, Amb. Chuks Ogbuka said her family’s problem started in 2018 when their kindred sold their family land for thirty million Naira (N30m) without notifying her husband.
She said after her husband got a wind of the development, he contacted the people concerned and demanded his share of the sold land.
Mrs Nnoruka who said she is managing to use her sight courtesy of the eye operation sponsored by Hon Chris Azubogu pointed out that life has become war for her family since that demand was made.
The sixty year old woman alleged that the concerned kindred rather than doing the needful decided to use policemen to force them into submission.
Mrs Nnoruka said her husband has become a ghost of himself due to a mysterious illness shortly after he demanded for his family’s share of the money raised through the sale of the family land.
“The last time my son was arrested, he spent thirty one days in SARS torture chamber, we had to take him to the hospital for treatment because his two hands were badly damaged.
“Now they have arrested him again in connection with trump up charge of belonging to motorcycle thieves gang. Four boys were arrested this time but others have regained their freedom leaving only my son.
“I have gone to SARS office to take him on bail but they were demanding for three hundred thousand Naira and I can’t raise such amount. If they had asked for ten thousand Naira, I would have run round and get it but their demand this time is beyond my family’s capability.
“It was when I was crying at the office of SARS that the coordinator for Corruption Watch, Amb Chuks Ogbuka saw me and took pity on me. He suggested we come to your office and that is why we are here.”
She said emphatically that her son is not a criminal but that certain elements in the family are hell bent on destroying him because his father asked for his right.” She said amidst sobbing.
The emotionally wrecked woman said she looks up to Dr Patrick Ubah, Hon Chris Azubogu and other people of goodwill to help her family out of the hands of the strong men in her kindred.
The coordinator for Corruption Watch, Amb Chuks Ogbuka said his organization would do everything in their capacity to get to the root of the matter even as he made a copy of petition prepared by his group available to our reporter.
