Engineers seek inclusion in governance

From Isaac Ojo Nnewi

The need to include professional engineers in governance at all levels has been stressed.

The chairman of Nnewi branch of Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engr Alex Ifeagwazi made this call yesterday in Nnewi during the World Engineering Day celebration with the theme ‘Sustainable Development.’

The Nnewi branch chairman of NSE said the world is celebrating sustainable development but Nigeria cannot be said to be said to be part of this celebrations because of apparent underdevelopment.

Engr Ifeagwazi said development is anchored on engineering, it has become imperative for the engineers to be involved in governance at all levels.

He decried a situation where technical department in government are headed by non-engineers.

“The importance of engineers and engineering to nation building cannot be over emphasized be it health, safety, environment, media and technology, ” Ifeagwazi stressed.

He passionately appealed to people who are building houses to engage the services of professional engineers rather than giving their projects to quacks to handle to avoid the consequence of building collapse.

“Engr David Umahi is doing wonderful well in Ebonyi, Engr Seyi Makinde is setting unprecedented record in Oyo state, Borno State governor who is also an engineer is trying his best in spite of the activities of the insurgents.

“Engr Chris Azubogu, the member representing Nnewi North, South and Ekwusigo local government areas in the National Assembly is called Mr Project. Is he the only one there?

“These few examples are enough to convince every doubting Thomas about what engineers can do,” he said.

The society as part of the celebration took sensitization visit to Chikason Group and Chukwuemeka Ojukwu University, Uli.
