Nigerian Army sustains regional security posture, supports democratic process in Benin Republic

By Chuks Oyema-Aziken

The Nigerian Army (NA), acting on the directive of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, deployed a company of troops to the Republic of Benin in April 2026 as part of proactive efforts to support democratic stability and prevent any breakdown of law and order during the country’s electioneering period.

The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, disclosed this in a statement, noting that the deployment was aimed at reinforcing stability and ensuring a peaceful electoral process in line with Nigeria’s commitment to regional peace and cooperation.

She added that although the troops were not assigned direct election duties, they were strategically positioned to provide a stabilising presence before, during and after the polls.

The troops, operating under Operation ATILEHIN ALAFIYA II, maintained a high level of operational readiness throughout their deployment. They conducted routine patrols, monitored key locations, and sustained a visible security presence across strategic areas within the Cotonou metropolis and its environs.

Their presence also contributed significantly during the presidential inauguration of President Romuald Wadagni, where Nigerian Army personnel were deployed in the early hours of the day to key locations, including the main inauguration venue and other designated points, ensuring a smooth and hitch-free ceremony.

The Commanding Officer provided direct operational supervision at the venue, while other troops were positioned at static points. Mobile patrol teams also carried out area domination operations to enhance situational awareness, deter criminal activity, and strengthen the overall security framework during the event.

The successful execution of the mission underscores the Nigerian Army’s rapid deployment capability, professionalism, and commitment to regional peace support operations. It further reflects Nigeria’s continued leadership role in promoting democratic governance and stability within the West African sub-region.

The Army reaffirmed its commitment to sustained collaboration with regional partners under the framework of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to ensure a secure and stable environment across the sub-region.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, commended the troops for their discipline, resilience, and professionalism, noting that their conduct reflects the core values and operational excellence of the Nigerian Army.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, alongside other dignitaries from Nigeria and the sub-region.
