2020 Tokyo Olympics shift imminent –Coe

*IOC considering plan B

World athletics supremo Sebastian Coe says a decision on postponing the Tokyo Olympics is imminent, as sources confirm several alternative plans are being worked on.

Tokyo 2020 organisers have started drafting possible alternatives to holding the Olympics in July-August, in contrast to the Japanese government’s stance that postponement is not an option, news agency Reuters reported.

IAAF president Lord Coe said in a statement: “A decision on the Olympic Games may become very obvious very quickly in the coming days and weeks.

“Idon’t think we should have the Olympic Games at all costs, certainly not at the cost of athlete safety. The issue of competition fairness is paramount,”Coe said, as athletes’ preparations around the world are thrown into various levels of disarray by the Covid-19 pandemic

While the coronavirus outbreak has disrupted sports events around the world, Japan has been steadfast in saying the Games will go on as planned, starting on July 24.
