Scholars decry infrastructural decay in Abia public schools

Scholars from Ihechiowa ancient kingdom in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State, have decried the level of infrastructural decay in public schools across the clan.

The scholars made the observation during an online intellectual forum held with Ihechiowa scholars and stakeholders from within Nigeria and in the diaspora aimed at proffering solutions to education challenges among communities in the clan.

The forum is an intellectual platform initiative of Dr Uwaoma Uche, an Associate Professor of Broadcasting, Film and Multimedia Studies at the Rhema University, Aba, aimed at fast-tracking community development via intellectual stimulation and interaction.

They noted with concern the level of dilapidation in public schools in the area describing it as “very pathetic”, while calling for urgent action to fix them.

The forum appealed to stakeholders, old student associations as well as illustrious sons and daughters of Ihechiowa to rise to the occasion “as the government and its agencies have failed to attend to them”.

They noted that if no immediate action were taken to address the challenge, many public schools in the area could completely collapse in the months ahead.

A Guest Speaker at the monthly virtual forum, Mr Kalu Nnukwu Kalu, said that community cooperative initiatives were the “only way out of the mess.”

He expressed regret at the level of decay of facilities in all the public schools in Ihechiowa, which according to him, was a total departure from the days when such schools produced high level internationally-rated academics.

In his contribution, Pastor ESV Onyechere Uche, said he could not withhold his tears when he visited his Alma Mater, Umunnabuo Secondary Technical School only to discover that it was a shadow of itself 32 years after his graduation.

Meanwhile, the forum, according to a release from Dr. Uche resolved to liaise with the school administrators to enforce an effective infrastructure and facilities’ management apparatus for public schools in the area.
