Int’l Youth Day: NHRC advocates youth participation in politics

By Ameh Ejekwonyilo

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world in commemorating the 2020
International Youth Day (IYD), the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), has advocated for more inclusion and participation of the youth in the decision-making process of government at all levels.

Executive Secretary of the Commission, Mr. Tony Ojukwu, who stated this in Abuja in commemoration of the 2020 IYD marked globally on 12th of August annually, noted that the event is a reminder to issues that concern young people worldwide, “as no nation can attain a meaningful and sustainable growth if the youth are left
behind”.

Ojukwu stated that the theme of this year’s commemoration – “Youth Engagement for Global Action,” is apt because it would inspire young people to play leading roles in community and national development.

The NHRC Boss therefore called on government and other stakeholders to ensure that the necessary institutional frameworks are strengthened to drive programmes and policies for the effective implementation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2250 on Youth, Peace and Security.

According to the Executive Secretary, the youth constitute a significant aspect of Nigeria’s population and key to its stability and socio-economic development, which demographic dividend should be explored for the promotion of human rights, rule of law and sustenance of Nigeria’s democracy.
