UNICAL Lecturer, Odey Magu Emerges Only Nigerian In Policy Framework Team Of SAICM

University of Calabar (UNICAL) lecturer in the department of Pure and Applied Chemistry, Comr. Thomas Odey Magu, an alumni of Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH) has emerged the only Nigerian on the list of the United Nations Strategic Approach for International Chemicals Management (SAICM) Policy Framework team.

Due to his contribution to his field of expertise (catalysis, renewable energy, and wastewater treatment), he was selected as the only research scientist in Nigeria to join the United Nations Strategic Approach for International Chemicals Management (SAICM) Policy Framework team as a Governance team member is a significant and prestigious recognition. SAICM is a global initiative established by the United Nations to promote the sound management of chemicals and their potential impact on human health and the environment. During his NYSC service year, he enrolled in a four-month program in Health Safety and Environment (HSE) to enhance his knowledge, He has a strong interest in the emerging technological sector in Nigeria and how it intersects with environment protection, education, science, and technology.
 
Being selected for this position means that, He is recognized as an expert in his field, particularly in areas related to environmental sustainability, chemicals management, and policy development. His expertise and contributions to the field have been recognized at an international level by the SAICM Policy Framework team. As a SAICM Governance team member, they play a vital role in shaping policies and strategies related to chemicals management on a global scale.

He is a diligent lecturer/researcher, who has been invited to present his work in so many conferences and has collaborated with researchers from U.K, China, Germany, India, Australia, and the U.S and published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles in the area of sustainable development in national and International journals to his name.

In parallel to thriving scientific research, Magu has tutored, coordinated/supervised undergraduates in their individual projects. As an Academic, he has delivered lectures, tutorials, and led laboratory experiments in various chemistry subjects including Chemical Thermodynamics, Chemical reaction, General chemistry, and Renewable energy. For the past 7 years, he has been involved in supporting young scholars realize their potential and career prospects. He is a member of American Chemical Society (ACS), Royal society of Chemistry (RSC), International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), Internal Younger Chemist Network (IYCN).

Mr Magu, who is a multiple award-winning lecturer, has bagged several awards in the area of Teaching/Research, mentorship and human capital development, like the American Chemical Society (ACS) Merit and Commendable award, Professional development grant, conference travel grant and the Royal Society of Chemistry professional development grant and many more. This honor signifies his dedication and excellence in the chemical sciences to drive scientific research and innovation to address contemporary challenges. He is currently a Ph.D. research scientist at the Institute of Chemistry Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, and also the President of the Association of Nigerian Students in China, Beijing chapter (ANSIC).

The SAICM, promotes the development of legal and regulatory frameworks. Established in 2006, SAICM promotes chemical safety around the world. It works with governments, industry, civil society, and the UN system to manage chemicals soundly throughout their life cycle so that by the year 2030, chemicals will be produced and used in ways that minimize adverse impacts on the environment and human health.

Nigeria and 34 other countries had representatives on this team with several other organizations.
Mr. Magu’s research has the potential to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, resulting in cleaner air, decreased greenhouse gas emissions, and enhanced energy security.
