Fire guts Enugu INEC headquarters

Parts of the Headquarters  of the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) in Enugu state was on Sunday night, May 16 gutted by fire.

Five Hilux vehicles belonging to the commission were burnt and some of the offices were partly damaged.

The quick intervention of fire officers from the Enugu state fire service saved the fire from destroying the entire INEC premises in Enugu and spreading across to other official buildings including the state owned Television house, a commercial bank etc located around the vicinity of Agric bank bus stop, Independence Layout, Enugu.

The incident which occurred around 10 pm happened barely seven days  after an inferno gutted parts of INEC office in Udenu local government area of Enugu state. While police investigations said the fire incident in Udenu INEC office was caused by electrical faults, some of the workers insisted that it was deliberately ignited by suspected hoodlums.

The INEC chairman in Enugu state ,Dr Emeka Ononamsdu, when contacted confirmed the incident, promising to brief newsmen later.

The Enugu state Chief fire officer,Engr Okwudiri Ohaa, when contacted said his team responded instantly.

The police is yet to issue any statement on the incident but unconfirmed sources alleged that some hoodlums deliberately set the five INEC hilux vehicles on fire and drove away.
