ECOWAS Female Parliamentarians Canvass better representation, funding at Parliament

As the ECOWAS Female Parliamentarians (ECOFEPA) strategize for more visibility in the activities of the sub-region, the body has called for more representation in the Community Parliament.


At a meeting of the association in Abuja, the President of ECOFEPA, Hon. Filomena de Fatima Ribeiro Vieria Martins, urged the female Parliamentarians from various Member-States to champion the course of the association by engaging women at all levels and encouraging them to participate in politics.


Hon. Martins in her address stated that Cape Verde is observing the parity law instituted by the parliament to promote female participation in politics. The parity law demands that the national assemblies of all member states have 30% female representatives in other to promote female participation in politics.


Speaking to the members of ECOFEPA as their guest, the Vice President of Liberia H.E. Jewel Taylor informed the members of ECOFEPA that it is high time they stamped their relevance on the activities of the sub-region. She urged the association to take their clamour for visibility a notch further by demanding that the Community Parliament creates a budget for the association.


“If you must be effective and get more work done, you need financial support; so we will start by demanding that the Parliament makes a provision for budget of ECOFEPA” she said.
