The Anambra State Government has declared Saturday, August 22, 2026, as a compulsory environmental sanitation day across the state as part of activities marking the state’s 35th anniversary.
The Commissioner for Environment, Dr Clem Aguiyi, announced the directive in a statement made available to journalists in Awka on Tuesday.
Aguiyi said movement would be restricted across the state from 7am to 10am on the sanitation day.
He, however, said persons on emergency and essential duties would be exempted from the restriction.
The commissioner also directed all markets across the state to undertake thorough cleaning exercises on Thursday, August 20, and Friday, August 21, ahead of the anniversary.
He urged Local Government Area chairmen and Presidents-General of communities to ensure full compliance with the directive and facilitate the evacuation of waste generated during the exercise.
“All Local Government Chairmen and Presidents-General of Communities should ensure full compliance and waste evacuation.
“Let us all participate to keep our environment clean and healthy,” Aguiyi said.
The commissioner called on residents to cooperate with the government and use the exercise to promote a cleaner, healthier and more environmentally friendly Anambra as the state commemorates its 35th anniversary.
