Military using wrong strategies on Boko Haram – lawmaker

By Jemila Okoduwa

A member of the House of Representatives, Ahmed Jaha, has called on the Armed Forces to change its strategy against Boko Haram and other insurgents.

Jaha, who represents Chibok/Damboa/Gwoza Federal Constituency in Borno State, stated that the military needs to take on the terrorists as against reacting all the time.

He asserted that the military always wait for the insurgents to attack them, instead of taking the attack against the insurgents to their hoods and hiding abode.

Jaha spoke at a debate on a motion moved by Haruna Msheila on the need to deploy more troops to the community bordering Sambisa forest.

The comments are coming in the wake of recent attacks that resulted in the death of a Brigadier General and some officers.

He said the attacks that resulted in the death of the senior officer happened some 4km from a major military formation, which means that insurgents took the fight to the army.

“So if we are going to win the war, Nigerian Army must change strategy, overcome living in a single position for the insurgents to come and attack them,” he said.

He also questioned the recent surrendering of terrorists to the Nigerian Army, noting that the terrorists are not surrendering due to the effort of the army but because of the vacuum left in the wake of Abubakar Shekau’s death.

According to him, the terrorists surrender because of the turf war going on in the forest.

He noted that the surrendering is “not as a result of either kinetic or non-kinetic operations or firepower, it was a result of segmentary opposition between the Boko haram members who are loyal to Shekau and some of them are loyal to the other faction.”

The House resolved to urge the military authorities to station at least a battalion of personnel and appropriate equipment at Mandiragrau, Askira and Garkida communities.
