From Douglas Blessing, Port Harcourt

Indorama Petrochemical Company, Eleme, Rivers State, has revealed that with the regular production of fertiliser by the firm and other companies in the country, Nigeria has been able to save about N7 billion annually.

The Head, Corporate Communications of Indorama, Dr. Jossy Nkwocha, who revealed this, during a facility tour of its petrochemicals complex with journalists, stated that the firm has contributed hugely in the nation’s agricultural growth through consistent production of the plant food.

He disclosed that Indorama supplied fertiliser to over 32 million farmers annually in the country, adding that local production of the plant food has breached the importation of fertilisers that the nation earlier spent N7 billion annually.

The company’s spokesman, also disclosed that the firm produces 3,000,000 metric tons of fertilizers annually and supplied to millions of farmers.

“Indorama supply fertiliser to about 32 million farmers. We have also told you that we supply UREA to blending plant and each of them may employ about 100 persons. So, Indorama is helping so much in creating jobs.

“We have two major products: Petrochemical and Fertiliser. The petrochemicals are the engine room of Nigeria’s industrialization.

“In the area of fertiliser, Nigeria used to import fertiliser worth about 7billion every year. Today, the fertiliser is coming from Indorama and any other companies that produces fertiliser but Indorama has more that 95 percent of the market of fertilizer in Nigeria”.

Meanwhile, the company has cleared the insinuation that its facility is emiting soot, an air pollution in the State.

Dr. Nkwocha who insisted that the company’s facilities does not emit soot, said Indorama operates a closed system that does not allow incomplete combustion.

According to him, the company was proactive in issues that may affect the environment and its production.

Nkwocha said Indorama was been monitored by the Federal Ministry of Environment in the federal and state level, the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency and others, stressing that the agencies as a third party audit indorama on quarterly bases.
He commended the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike for his quick intervention in tackling the issue of soot pollution in the state.

“We have shown you all our fertiliser operations, all our petrochemical operations and to show that we are an open book and to show you that Indorama operations does not emit any soot whatsoever.

“We have a closed system and this closed system does not allow any strenuous gas to escape. And as they have explained to us in the control room we buy this natural from either Agip or TotalEnergies and we don’t allow it to waste by flaring it.

“Indorama knows we have a capable Governor who is handling the soot matter so it is not our own responsibility to begin to cast ascertain on anybody. Our governor is handling it very ably, is an action governor”.
