Deregistration of 21 political parties: Supreme Court has murdered democracy, says defunct PPA chair, Ameh

Former chairman of the defunct Progressives Peoples Alliance (PPA), Peter Ameh has accused the Supreme Court of Nigeria of contributing in the murdering of the nation’s democracy, following its ruling last Friday, setting aside the earlier judgment of the appeal court in the de registration of political parties  by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

Ameh in a statement he issued at the weekend in his response to the court verdict, noted that the it would been a great pleasure, if supreme Court had listened to the facts of the case instead of dismissing and setting aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal on the grounds of technicalities.

“With today’s verdict affirming the de registration of political parties by the Supreme Court, the biggest casualty is the democratic space.

“It has been shrunk and will continue to shrink as long as long as Section .225.(A) of the 1999 Constitution is retained and the judgment allowed to endure,, the destination inevitably will be a one or two party state which does not augur well for plurality of opinion.

“Congratulations to everyone who stood on side of democracy because democracy means continuous deepening of the democratic space for civil and political participation.

“Yes we know that our opinion was not sort after because those who lose are usually orphans but have to give one in order to bring closure to the process. We have lost the battle but not the war.” he stated
