The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Ebonyi State chapter has called on all political aspirants in different political parties in the state to eschew violence and embrace peace in the interest of the people, especially during and after the 2023 elections.

At the end of its May 2022 general meeting in Abakaliki, the Association noted that no individual’s political ambition worths more than the peace and unity of the state and enjoined politicians to avoid utterances and actions capable of heating the polity.

Nawoj applauded the state government on its efforts to ensure that Ebonyi remains the safest state in the southeast.

Speaking on the safety of journalists, the Chairman of NAWOJ in the state, Comrade Nkechinyere Oginyi, urged members not to jeopardize their safety while carrying out their lawful duties, especially in covering or reporting election matters.

The Association also decried the gruesome murder of the student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto over alleged blasphemous comments, stating that people should not be allowed to take laws into their hands no matter the level of provocation.

It, therefore, called for tolerance among the different religious groups in the country to engender peaceful co-existence and development.

The body urged the police to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators of the heinous act to serve as a deterrent to others.
